  • Audi launch R8 GT3 racecar

The R8 GT3, or R16 to use its internal name, uses the 4.2-litre V8 from the production car tuned to produce in excess of 500bhp (without restrictors). In accordance to GT3 regulations the car is rear-wheel drive and runs through a six-speed sequential ‘box. Despite the pictures you see here and the fact that the R16 has already been through a shake-down test with Frank Biela at the wheel, race teams won’t get their cars until Autumn 2009. However, Audi will race a works car throughout the 2009 season in Europe to prove its speed and durability. Place you order for a road-going R8 GT3 now… it might just happen.

Well as they always say if it looks good then it will go good. On that basis I expect this to be at the back of the grid and in last place with a level of consistency. Bloody awful looking thing but then I am not a huge fan of the road car and fully appreciate that its function over from when it comes to race cars.

A road going R8 GT3 (RS?) would be something to get talking about…just imagine the possibilities…

I’d like to see some pressure levered at Porsche in that sort of extreme driver-centric market position.

There are some bigger pics of the Evo website (and various others)… I would post a link but don’t know if that would be frowned upon on here.

    I think it’s stunning looking.

Looks frightening similar to the VLN car, set up by sport auto and Michael Düchting. I wonder if there is a relation, especially because the already existing R8 racing car, driven on the Nordschleife, Chris should know it from his races, is as well transformed to rear wheel drive only.

What’s the point? Surely the Diesel R8 due out sometime soon will be quicker in a race (whisper quiet, boring but quicker).
