Title: Fiat Grande Punto Abarth
Location: North England
Description: Jethro joins the launch of the Fiat Grande Punto Abarth.
Date: 2008-08-01
For a segment so packed with metal the pecking order in the world of the hot hatch is usually pretty predictable.
Not because most of the contenders are bad, but because the class-leaders are so good. For what seems like forever the best hatches have been the Renault Clio 197 and Mini Cooper S. Sure, you can find different flavours – the Corsa VXR is fantastic if you want visual impact and big-turbo torque, the Fiesta ST Mountune has a sublime chassis – but for all round appeal, for performance and a poised chassis, the Renault and Mini are irresistible. But now there’s a new contender with a great name, some serious hardware and, we hope, a sprinkling of Italian magic. The Fiat Grande Punto Abarth could just break up the Renault/Mini hegemony.

July 31, 2008I quite like the design of those rims. It’s like something you’d expect to see on a car ten times more expensive.

July 31, 2008Oops. Meant to use ‘wheels’ instead of ‘rims’ there. Wish there was an edit function..

July 31, 2008Can’t wait to see what you guys think of this. Im currently driving the 1.9 TD Sporting Grande Punto (not all that ‘sporting’ but pretty brisk) and am seriously considering one of these next.
Hope its as great to drive as it looks!

August 1, 2008Looking forward to the review of this. On paper it should be a corker, but being a thinly disguised Fiat will it hold together?
I hope so, as I’m seriously considering this as a candidate for my next car, alongside the Abarth 500.

August 1, 2008I’ve always been a Fiat fan, as even through the bravo/brava stage, they were still making something interesting – the coupe. After recently downgrading to a Panda 100hp from an M3 Evo, i’m finding these Abarths a little different to the norm, and very desirable. I look forward to the report. Alastair.

August 21, 2008I thought this could be interesting but the ESP can’t be switched off which makes it a total non-starter. A shame.
