Ferrari California First Drive

A retractable, hardtop convertible. A double-clutch gearbox and a new V8 tuned for good emissions. Enzo’s grave must be rotating at quite a rate. But hold on a minute: the new California is a Ferrari like no other.

Just a quick question really…..who provided the words, as this information is made curious by it’s absence?

Oh, before I forget, one more thing…This car is the still born Maserati Spyder. It was at an advanced stage, but deemed too close to Ferrari performance. With the management of Maserati passing to Alfa Romeo, Ferrari took over this project and turned it into the California. They added their gearbox and other ancillaries…would be interesting to see where the chassis originated…cut-down QP anyone?

I noticed the lack of a credit for the words too. Whoever they are I don’t think they have driven the Ferrari 250 California (see my comments in the Ferrari V12 group).

Really undecided on this one. Will reserve definitive judgment until I see one in the metal. But in these photos it reminds me of Japanese super-coupe with a dash of added Corvette.

Don’t know – I almost think Ferrari are trying a little too hard with this. The 612 has grown on me quite a lot though, and the 599 looks good to my eyes. So maybe time will mellow it.

When my wife first saw it, she thought it was a Peugeot…

Not convinced; it looks like the bastard love-child of a Lexus SC 430 and an s2000, with a hint of Maserati thrown in at the front. The rear 3/4 view is especially ugly.

Lots of marques go quickly and well. Many do so better than Ferrari, who need good looks to overcome the issues of so-so build quality and vicious overpricing. In this respect, the California fails.

hi guys, been away so catching up. i am sorry to sound negative, but did you buy this in? It reads and feels like a magazine article from one of the ordinaries. stuff that you do always is so much more. mind you, if you were busy doing your 430 scud/gt2/lp560 gig, then thats just fine with me. that is 5 star gear .. as is the super saloon shootout tv show .. giggled happily into my sunday morning “bad boy”. please dont feel you have to cover every opening of an envelope (some front engine, rear drive V8 envelope admittedly) as and when it un-sticks. if you`re too busy, or the ignorant ones dont invite you along, wait till later and save your hard earned pennies to spend on the splendid car porn that you do so well .. or a ski holiday, to the alps, in a gt3, as an obitiuary, and can i come. M

  • Hi Marc, I am sure you will enjoy what we have planned for next week.

You might have imagined November being a quiet month, but with Dickie driving the AMG SL65 Black and our end-of year Nurburging escapade we will surely have plenty of car-porn to keep you happy.
