• DR's mystery new long-termer

Click here!

As we’re big fans of car-related day dreaming here at DR we thought we’d provide you with some fuel for idle thought. Now that the nasty man from Ford has been to take his Focus Mountune away Mr Meaden has gone and bought himself a new set of wheels. Well, when we say ‘new’ we mean new to him rather than brand new.

Given he already has a lovely Porsche 964RS he never drives (literally never, ever, ever), and a 200SX drift shed that’s slowly rotting away outside his house, this might seem like folly. But this time he assures us he’ll use it in any weather on any journey… frankly we don’t believe him.

Question..Question is, what has he bought?

Well, much like his RS it’s a lightweight model. It has window winders, cloth seats and no power steering, but it’s also a lot more practical than it sounds. You want more clues? Maybe later, that’s your lot for now.

Entries close on Friday (post your answers below). Winner receives boundless kudos and a few DR stickers.

    @Rick: D*mmit, I was just about to post that suggestion!

    Can’t say I’d consider the ‘Teg as particularly practical, it only having two doors, but it is a motor that you could drive every day come rain or shine with no problems.

    I just see one problem with all the options I remember of, or with some of the guesses, maybe even mine – window winders.
    I thought of an Elise/Exige, but Richard has already gone that road before… And the practicality isn’t very present.

    As I say, one of you has it nailed, but I’d like to keep you guessing. Would it help if I said it cost less than £3k and has steel wheels? I certainly hope so, or you’re not the sad bunch of car nerds I think you are.

    @Pedro Sousa aka Ginga: Just to cover all the bases, and try to bring the stickers to Portugal, I’ll say the other option, the 306 Rallye.
    I don’t know if the UK spec 306 Rallye did bring steel wheels, though.
    I’m sure the 106 did, so I think you’re right on the money (or the stickers)…

    Had an Rallye S2, loved it and shoudn’t have sold it. In saying that the drive from London to Inverness almost did my back (and ears) in.

    Will exchange stickers for Deep Heat and a stack of D90 casettes.

    Hi Pedro,

    I like the idea of it standard at the moment (I was horribly tempted by the trackday version that Kermit mentioned, and I mean HORRIBLY tempted but decided it would just be a smaller version of my 964RS, which wouldn’t be good as a daily runabout). That said I quite fancy investigating any old Peugeot Sport upgrades.

    I also want to get the few parking dings sorted and the paint properly detailed, so there should be plenty to keep me interested for a while. If any of you have owned Rallyes and tweaked them let me know what’s good and what’s not.

    @Richard – DR: Ha! DBT couldn’t spell Rallye or get S2 :P

    I used to have a red S1 Rallye. I’ve been trying to find something as focused and involving ever since I sold it :(

    @Marco: Thanks for the link. That car looks great, especially with what I think is a graphic of the Col de Turini on the roof! Have I guessed correctly? If so I think I really am a nerd..
    Much as I’d love to have a fully modified Rallye my original need was for a car I can easily drive to work/airports etc in on the odd occasion we don’t have a test car. Obviously I couldn’t buy anything too sensible or dull, hence the Rallye, but to take it that far would be foolish, even by my standards. Besides I have to say I’m enjoying the old-school feel of the car in standard spec. That said I’m sure I’ll be tempted by a few tweaks eventually ;-)

    @Ben: No, DBT didn’t spell Rallye correctly, or get the S2 bit, but I’d be pretty cruel if I didn’t give him the nod! Don’t worry, you’ll get your stickers. Your S1 looks great – and very sideways – in that shot. Looks like the exit of turn on at the old Ty Croes circuit to me. I’ve enjoyed many a skid (and a few spins) through there in my time!

    I’ll be starting a Long Term Group in the DR Community for my Rallye in the next week, so please feel free to come along and share your Pug experiences and images there. In the meantime email me your address and I’ll get the stickers out to you asap. Likewise DBT and Pedro if you’re out there.

    @Richard – DR:

    No hard feelings here.

    Yes that’s the corner after School on the old circuit. Most of the pictures I’ve seen of you sideways round there have been going anti-clockwise. I seem to remember the Clio 172 being one of them.

    I’ve never spun off on that corner but have been blackflagged a few times for abuse to poor rallyes. The only other car I’ve owned that’s been so adjustable and agile is a Caterham.

    I’ll try and dig out some more super sideways Rallye pics for your Rallye Group

    Ben, just post the URL of your YouTube video and when selected it will open in a floating Ajax window.

    So Richard, the Twingo RS still didn’t manage to seduce you quite like the old Rallye, did it? Enjoy it, but then I know you will. Chris and his M5… Pah!!

    @Marco: Thanks for the info. That’s a cool idea.

    @Arthur: Honestly I think the sub-£3k price for the Rallye seduced me (well that and the super-cool white steel wheels, cult status etc etc). Besides, don’t forget we have a Twingo 133 long termer, so I can always get my fix of 21st Century French hot hatches too!
