   This blows my mind. Absolute vintage McRae, on the verge of a huge accident all the way through but on this occasion he keeps it altogether despite cornering speeds and angles that I just can’t comprehend. There’s moments in this clip where he has the car set up for turns I can’t even see, hundreds of metres back.

   Interesting you should say that Marty, because if you remember how this event ended, it was with one of the biggest accidents of Colin’s career. Changed the way WRC drivers drove for ever.

   True, and I believe Nicky Grist described Colin as taking virtually every corner a gear higher than in the notes on this rally, so desperate was he to win. Too desperate, as it turned out. I remember constantly hitting refresh on wrc.com when the rally was running to see where McRae was, and the news that he’d crashed mid-stage was absolutely gutting. Had he not caught that tree stump and rolled the Focus into retirement, I suspect he’d have been a double world champion and Burnsie would have left Wales empty-handed.

   I miss this kind of utter, unshakeable commitment in the modern WRC. The last time I can remember being lost for words after seeing a driver’s time through a stage was Petter Solberg in Wales in 2003 – Margham 1, I think. A proper, let-it-all-hang-out maximum attack drive, that leaves you in no doubt that he couldn’t have gone any faster. Loeb routinly blitzes the opposition seemingly without trying, and for all that he might be the best rally driver of his generation, that’s mostly dull to watch.
