Mika Hakkinen & Michael Schumacher at Spa

One of the most spectacular (and risky) overtakes in F1, we’ve found a vid with the preceeding lap on it so you can see what a huge gap Mika ‘the only driver Schumacher feared’ Hakkinen makes up in just one lap, and remind yourself how much better the unlimited, pneumatic-valved, constantly-variable inlet-trumpetted V10s sounded than the new V8s.

I must have seen this clip a hundred times and so that move looks like the obvious choice, the only possible move that Hakkinen could have made, yet at the time … wow.

Everyone went ballistic. Such an audacious move at incredibly high speed – to go 3-up at 200mph takes big, big cherries. The post-race press conference is wonderful, too:

“…I took the Plan B and I went completely inside and I overtook the backmarker and I overtook the Michael.”

    Mika, you’re a legend.
