Prodrive, left doing a bit of thumb-twiddling since Subaru dropped out of the WRC, has decided to dedicate some of its energy to the Scooby Sprint Championship.
The erstwhile World Rally Champions will be fielding a self-funded WRC-spec Impreza against some of the most highly-tuned Imprezas in the country at the burgeoning, airfield-based sprint championship. There’s no news on who’ll be driving, but were assuming that it’s not going to Marcus Gronholm.

March 26, 2009Awesome. I would like to see them do well, and that Impreza looks rather nice. Shame the road-going ones can’t quite muster that level of bad-ass-ness.
I wonder what advantage, in terms of equipment/spec/weight, a top-spec WRC car has over a tuner’s car?

March 26, 2009I guess the main advantage that the WRC team will have is that, thanks to all the trick diffs and mega suspension, their car will be putting down all 300bhp and 450lb.ft of torque all the time, everywhere. The guys running 800bhp won’t!
The WRC car will probably be loads more rigid and generally just far better prepared and supported.
Whatever happens, for me it’s going to be one of the most interesting car comparisons… well, ever.
I’m not sure what tyres they’re allowed to run in the championship though.

March 26, 2009Those of you doubting the tuner car’s potential best not be too hasty. For example, the RCM Impreza is an awesome machine and very highly developed, ditto the Zen performance car. They are not to be thought of as one trick pony’s or drag cars!

March 26, 2009Oh, I’m not underestimating them at all – Litchfield’s time attack car was a thing of beauty – but the WRC car is on a completely different level to even the finest privately-funded efforts.
I can’t wait to see what happens.

March 27, 2009@RussellB It was the Roger Clark Impreza that I was thinking of when I wondered about the advantages (if any) the WRC car would have over the ‘regular’ cars. The RCM car is a thing of engineering beauty, and really, monstrously fast.

March 27, 2009Would have been nice to see them using ‘real’ circuits, I suppose using airfields cuts costs but driving between some cones isn’t really the same…
