While we were at Silverstone yesterday, getting some lap times for the 911 Turbo, M6 and R8, we spied this thing on the access road to the Stowe circuit.

I am quite sure it is a Renault, given that there is a Renault logo visible on the car, probably a new Clio

Renaultsport Megane racing mule? Why bother with the “don’t look at me” paint job though? It’s not a road car. Wouldn’t it be tested in France anyway?

Given the cut ‘n’ shut proportions, the comedy wide arch kit, and the side exit exhuasts, either a new racing formula to go under the Megane Trophy, or a replacement for the Megane Trophy… Could also explain why the race team truck was there…

I originally though it was one of the new Megane Trophy cars but then it looks front engined. Is it a racing version of the new Laguna Coupe?

Hopefully its the Renault boys being optimistic about their F1 championship chances and are prepping the RenaultSport Megane Coupe 300 F1 Team R29.R or something similar.

Please, please, please, please, please, please let Renault have made something mental. Please please, please, please let it be rear wheel drive, have an absurdly short wheelbase for the power and embody the spirit of the R5 maxi, Clio V6 etc.

I remember reading an interview with the head of renaultsport, I think it may have been in evo, where he said the ideal renaultsport car would have 300bhp, be rearwheel drive and weigh 1200 kg.

Renault, i know this makes very little difference, but if you make something mental, I promise I’ll buy one.

A near grass roots race series in the same vein as the Legends racers (tiny, bike engined and rwd with 50′s American aesthetics…absolute hoot to drive!) but a little more ‘polished’ machinery from one manufacturer (Renault) ?

It reeeeally doesn’t strike me as looking at all like a road car, too much of a characature…just look at the proportions/exhaust/deep dish wheels/diffuser etc…there appears to be a roll cage visible through the door?

It’s a development mule for the 2010 Renault Clio Sport Cup Trophy, based on the new Renault Clio Sport…

I’de go for this one! Even though Renault brought us the ‘mental’ R26R, I don’t believe they done something in the same scale for the Clio. And pretty sure that´s based on the Clio! Despite the side window awkward line, the rear lights and boot shape is the same.

Could it be a halo model for show days etc. – an f1 car based on a clio-esque body – similar to the Espace F1 from a few years back?

Good way to link renaultsport with the F1 operation…

    it can be two things;
    1. Renault talked about a RWD, light (1200kg) sports car with power of 250/300bhp.

    2. more possibly a renault clio RS V6 like in the olden days

say the new engine, gearbox and drivetrain from the 370z Nissan stuck to a supercool clio renaultsport suspension and body…

if its a road car in development that is. could be a car for some kind of a trophy. but looks awesome, wonder if its faster than my 135i :)

It’s hard to tell from the camera angle but it looks as though the front may have been lengthened. That and the shrouding of the side exhaust makes me doubt it’s mid-engined like the old Clio V6.
If it was a road car why would they be at Silverstone for testing. Surely a French track or somewhere like the MIRA test centre would do.
The sticker in the rear window looks to be the Renault F1 Team logo and that looks to be one of the F1 transporters. But the aerodynamics look to crude for a race car. Especially that rear diffuser which, if my understanding is correct, would have no effect at all. The angle is too short and steep and the strakes aren’t long enough.
Also that side exhaust would be very vulnerable for a race car.
By today’s standards the camouflage seems pretty extensive, not the usual black and white zebra approach.
I think 0ChrisA is probably right, it’s a halo car to drum up some interest.

This is a Renault CarToon. No, I’m not joking…

It is used for stunt driving demos, I saw it first time at the F1 Roadshow in Lisbon, there were a couple of them, one was being driven by Terry Grant. I had never seen it or heard of it before as well, but they did put up a great show.

I wasn’t too far of the mark with the legends…here’s Terry Grant at it in one at Knockhill

Would Renault really spend the time and effort making a car solely for performing doughnuts in front of crowds? Why would such a car be present at Silverstone with the support of a race truck? When did this car first appear?

    Race series…it has to be?

Renault must have wanted a car to look like their own for the shows hence the funny looking creation.

…still why silverstone…surely it’s not the type of car that needs tested at an international circuit?

This is a Clio- Style fiberglass silhouette body which has been placed over the top of a one make series car. They support F1 races at various European tracks, I saw them at Magny Cours last year. The cars only weigh 750kgs, rear wheel drive and have a 150bhp n/a engine but i’m not sure on size. Other silhouette body’s that have fitted the car are the BMW 1 Series, the Renault Megane and even an odd looking squashed Ford Mustang!
