We’ve managed to get our hands on the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series, and thought it might be fun to bring along the sublime Ferrari 599 and mighty Porsche 997 GT2. Let us know what you’d like to see and know here on Dialogue, and follow us today and tomorrow on Twitter as we put all three to the test.

If you want to add an RS6 to the mix let me know! I’ve borrowed one for a couple of days and don’t need much of an excuse to do something other than my day job!

It must be something to wake up in the morning, look upon a group like that, and think “ah well, another day at the coal face…”

And to think, you chose that instead of sitting at a desk all day, attending meetings and conference calls, deciding which suit to wear of a morning, and trying to remember if it’s a ham sandwich or chicken sandwich day today.

Sheer madness. A lot like this group test. :)

My guess today is it’s a Ginster’s pasty from the shell garage in Betws-y-coed…

Wads – don’t think the RS6 quite has the grunt for this test!

You might want to test the SL65 AMG against the RUF RT12 – these two are of a not unsimilar madness…:-)

Do the wheels on the SL65 BS (LOL – not noticed that before) look as cheap and nasty in the flesh as they do in the pictures?

Looking forward to in-car and drive by video footage, dare I say it but the SL will make the others sound distinctly ordinary!

Well the SL65 AMG Black is reportedly engineered by Mercedes as a track tool and certainly looks like it would make a decent F1 safety car… so how about trying to stay in front of a Porsche 911 GT2 and a Ferrari 599 as they lap Silverstone?

Interting that the Merc and Porsche are tuned versions of lesser cars while the 599 is a thoroughbred to begin with.

    Ok seems I can’t edit:

    SL65 Black – somewhere around 1900kg?
    599 – around 1688kg
    GT2 – around1442kg

    Big big differences!

I’d like to see if the SL can keep up with the other two, and if not, what aspect of its performance is the biggest hindrance; comparison with 599 more apt I guess, both being front engined RWD.

Yes, 30 – 180 mph, average speed over 5 continuous laps at Silverstone and your usual B-road comparo would do it for me.

I think its exactly what they use as the F1 safety car…… it was ceratinly an SL they used in Shanghai so it would make sense for it to be the BS version.

Jethro…. yes I know the RS6s measley 575bhp doesn’t seem much compared to the monsters you have at the moment but thought I’d offer my services anyway just in case!!! ;-)

Pls comment re: relative turbo lag; brake pedal feel; traction and braking distances in wet/bumpy rds; 70-100MPH accel from routine cruising (to summarize relative tq, turbo lag and gearshift times in routine use); exhaust note from drivers’ seat in closed cars at varying speeds; sport seat ergonomics; relative real-world ground clearance; wear/robustness of F1 clutch vs GT2 clutch; 599 headlights real-world usefulness vs 65/GT2′s; 65′s downshift blips, how useful….thanks; look forward to article

Some decent video of these cars pressing on along some nice welsh roads. With the GT2 getting all crossed up Ferrari F40 style in a straight line when the boost comes on down a wet road. That is all.

I think the Merc looks very DTM and the Porsche needs no introduction, but on first impressions I’d go for the Ferrari.

If Mercedes wanted to build an all-conquering super-coupe it would not be based on the SL (too big, too heavy) and as much I would love the Porsche, the Ferrari feels appreciably more special to me. But I’ll wait and see…

The Ferrari on its lockstops please…

All of the stuff mentioned by earlier posters, plus photos showing the relative size of each car – every time I see a 599 in the flesh I’m shocked at how huge they are.
