I saw this at the weekend. I felt pretty sorry for Franz Engstler (the guy in the lead BMW). Apparently the decision to send out the Safety Car was not made by the Clerk of the Course (as it should have been), the teams didn’t have enough warning to get the pitboards out and warn their drivers and so none of them had any idea that a dopey idiot in a Daewoo econobox would be crawling onto the racing line as they passed the pits. Engstler had nowhere to go – you can see he jinks slightly to the left before the crash, but there’s not enough space.

The FIA have apprently confirmed that Engstler was not at fault, too:

How do you not punch out the safety car driver?

I’m sorry but was that not a bit of an abrupt exit from the pits from the safety car? Looks like he didn’t even seem to be aware how close the drivers were….

Shameful driving by whoever was trying the safety car.
