This is a truly tragic example of how not to treat a supercar, from what we can see in the video the road appears to be straight and the weather clear, so how did a £1million Bugatti Veyron end up in the lake?
The creator of this YouTube video, exoticcar2009 describes the scene:
“I recorded this 5 miles away from my house in Galveston County, Texas. We have a very rich neighborhood right next to the beach. I was stunned! Third or fourth Veyron Crashed. A distracted owner of a Bugatti Veyron, one of the world’s fastest production cars, accidently drove Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, into a lake in Galveston, Texas. The driver was uninjured, but the car, which can sell for around $2 million, was partially submerged in three feet of water.”
The local paper, The Galveston Daily News, reports;
“LA MARQUE — The owner of one of the world’s fastest production automobiles accidentally drove his fine-tuned, French-built car into a saltwater lagoon Wednesday.
The man, who police said was from Lufkin, was uninjured after escaping the partially submerged Bugatti Veyron as it came to rest in about 2 feet of saltwater. The man, who refused to give his name, was looking at real estate in Galveston.
About 3 p.m. a low-flying pelican distracted him as he traveled north on Interstate 45 just south of the hurricane levee near Omega Bay. The man jerked the wheel, dropped his cell phone, and the car’s front tire left the frontage road and entered a muddy patch, which foiled his attempt to maneuver away from the lagoon. The Veyron’s powerful engine gurgled like an outboard motor for about 15 minutes before it died.
Police and firefighters blocked the frontage road until MCH Towing employee Gilbert Harrison carefully wenched the car away from riprap and onto the soft, muddy bank. It’s the rarest car in the world, not something you can just replace, the man said.”
The saddest part is at around 3 minutes into the video, the tow-truck driver decides to clean his hands by washing them in the muddy water before reaching in to the Veyron and turning it’s exquisitely covered leather steering wheel – he doesn’t even bother to wipe his hands on his clothes before doing so, presumably because he didn’t want to dirty them… Oh dear!

November 13, 2009Every time I watch this video I can’t believe how someone who spends nearly $2m on a car is happy to just let some local breakdown garage hoist it on their truck using a metal chain.
Boggles the mind…

November 14, 2009Thanks Chas, I have added the video of the driver losing control to our YouTube channel and an updated article here on SkiddMark.
Seeing the accident actually happening, it’s even more baffling how the driver ended up losing control of such a capable car and driving into the lake.
