New video: McLaren MP4-12C takes to the track

McLaren’s MP4-12C is due to go on sale from Spring 2011, and between now and then McLaren will continue to refine and develop the 12C until it achieves their target of being the world’s best high-performance sports car.

In this video McLaren Automotive provide an insight into a performance car testing program from the development team behind the new McLaren MP4-12C. The challenging and comprehensive development program has taken the car to some of the world’s most famous race circuits and most inhospitable driving environments.

Combined with simulation programs, Formula 1 techniques, personnel and processes, and thousands of miles of on-road driving, the McLaren Automotive testing team has taken giant strides through 2009 in the 12C’s development.

We hear from Dick Glover, McLaren Automotive Technical Director and Chris Goodwin, Chief Test Driver as well as general views about the McLaren Technology Centre.

It’s great to see the MP4-12C being driven quickly, it certainly looks promising and if McLaren’s previous supercar is anything to go by then they’ll make sure it enters the market in top spot.

I just can’t get enough of this quote from Chris Goodwin, McLaren’s chief test driver, posted on Autocar.

“We are the most successful ever motor racing team…”

    How?

That’s a very interesting comment, I hadn’t noticed that. I’ll check over the weekend and see just how well McLaren compare with Porsche and Ferrari..

I guess it might depend on what your definition of success is ;)

These are Scuderia Ferrari’s records as of the last race of the ’09 season.

The Ferrari team has achieved unparalleled success in Formula One. Ferrari cars and Ferrari drivers have also won the Mille Miglia eight times, the Targa Florio seven times, and the 24 hours of Le Mans nine times. In F1, the Italian team has the unique distinction of owning nearly all significant records (as of the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix), including:

    Most constructor championships: 16
    Most driver championships: 15
Most Grands Prix started (all-time): 793
    Most wins (all-time): 210[1]
Most wins (season): 15 (shared with McLaren)
    Most podiums (all-time): 628
    Most podiums (season): 29
    Most one-two finishes (all-time): 79
    Most pole positions (all-time): 203
    Most points (all-time): 4,995.27
    Most points (season): 262
    Most fastest laps (all-time): 219
Highest winning percentage: ~26% (for teams with at least 10 wins)

In 2004, Ferrari also surpassed Ford as the most successful F1 engine manufacturer, with 182 wins (to Ford’s 176 wins). Due to the availability of the Cosworth V8 to private teams, a total of 6,639 Ford-powered cars were entered between 1967 and 2004, compared to 1,979 starts for Ferrari and Petronas-badged engines during the same period.
