Video: Jay Leno recaptures the spirit of Rendezvous in a Mercedes SLS AMG

Last week we launched our Christmas competition, in association with Spirit Level Films, Club GT and ROAD magazine. The competition is based on the cult film C’était un Rendezvous, with the stunning prize of a weekend in the Nissan GT-R to be won.

If you haven’t already done so, then head on over to our competition page and have a go, but we are also running a second competition asking you to recreate your own version of Rendezvous and win the chance to join a photo shoot with ROAD magazine.

Either our timing is impeccable or perhaps Jay Leno has heard that Phil Royle is such great company and is desperately keen to win the prize, because he’s just released his own rendition of Rendezvous filmed on the roads around Los Angeles.

In the short film Jay seeks to prove that there’s a great race track hidden in every city and proceeds to show us the roads of Mulholland Drive, Laurel Canyon, Sunset Boulevard and Coldwater Canyon at the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

It’s not a bad film to watch, especially with the glorious sound of the SLS AMG as a backdrop. It’s easy to cringe at Jay’s comparison between Mulholland and the Nurburgring, but perhaps there’s some truth in his theory that there are some great roads in the most unlikely of places.

The film is directed by the British broadcaster and journalist, Jeremy Hart, who also narrates the second video below.

Take a look and see what you think, then perhaps suggest some roads in your city or town that would be as memorable to drive.

You can watch the “Making of the Fast and Famous” in the panel below.

He almost lost me at that point when he drew a comparison between Mulholland Drive and the Nurburgring, but the rest of the video is worth watching just for the sounds and the images from the bullet cams.

Wow, very nice. Have to say i didnt really pay much attention to the SLS when it was first announced. However having heard that engine note, my eyes are firmly fixed on new about this car. :-D  would be great if Mercedes or AMG would provide a download, would love to have this as my iPhone ring tone.

But for now looks like I have a new car for the bedroom wall  :-P
