Fernando Alonso picks up his new Maserati GranCabrio at Fiorano

We can think of many less appealing company cars to collect than a Maserati GranCabrio, although if I were Fernando Alonso I might be a ‘little’ envious of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button who were both promised an MP4-12C supercar by Ron Dennis earlier this week…. which would replaced by a new one each year.

Anyway back to our Spanish ex-World Champion. Alonso has chosen for his GranCabrio several elegant fixtures, opting for a darker shade for the exterior in combination with two-tone upholstery for the interior. He chose Grigio Granito (granite grey) for the body, while the interior features a combination of Pearl Beige and Bordeaux leather, matching a soft top in the same Bordeaux shade.

The GranCabrio represents the essence of Maserati from its unmistakable Pininfarina design to its 434 bhp 4.7 litre V8 coupled with a 6-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Fernando was apparently impressed with the roominess offered by the GranCabrio, perfect for four adult passengers. In fact the GranCabrio is the first four-seater convertible in the history of Maserati.

The Maserati GranCabrio is on sale throughout Europe, via the Maserati Dealer Network, with right hand drive examples reaching UK showrooms in April at a price of £95,510.

I wonder if Fernando has negotiated a deal to get a new one each year…?

Ironic how this coincides with Clarkson’s GranTurismo S review in how he says how awful it is to drive, agonizingly slow, and ugly.

Hehe, can’t see it bothering most of the owners of this car though.  If ever a car was designed to tootle around London at 20mph with your face and V8 on show, this is it.  FWIW, I don’t think it’s that ugly, though I can see why some might say it is – that front air intake is rather on the biblical size side of things.

I used to think the GranTurismo was awesome, but my perception of it has slowly but surely faded. I do think the Cabrio has cured it of some of the bulkiness the coupe’s greenhouse has.
