Peugeot announces the 508

There was a time when Peugeot made great drivers cars although recently we’ve noted some promising signs of a recovery – the 308 CC rewards enthusiastic pedalling and the new RCZ has genuine appeal both visually and for its driving dynamics. So we look towards Peugeot’s forthcoming 508 with a modicum of hope if not optimism.

The 508 will be launched in 2011, so at this stage the details are scarce, Peugeot promise a range of powerplants that will benefit from the latest engine technology including Peugeot’s new e-HDi stop and start system, enhancing fuel economy by up to 15%.

More interesting news will be the incorporation of Peugeot’s HYbrid4 technology, which will be made available on the 508 and provide 200bhp performance combined with all-wheel drive and emissions of 99g/km of CO2 (or zero in electric mode).

The Peugeot 508 will be available in two body styles: a Saloon (with a length of 4.79 m) and a SW (4.81 m) and both models will be revealed to the public in October 2010 at the Paris Motor Show.

The remainder of Peugeot’s press material talks about its ‘french chic’ design, evolved from the stylistic codes first unveiled on the SR1 Concept Car, its spacious interior, large boot and comfortable ride. Okay, those don’t sound like clues for a driver’s car, but perhaps we should give Peugeot the benefit of the doubt until such time as we get behind the wheel.
