Sometimes a great photo is all about good timing.. and a little bit of luck. This one from today’s DTM race in Oschersleben tells an interesting story. Running 2nd in the race Mercedes driver Bruno Spengler was on course to secure the championship lead, but a technical problem with the front of the car prevented him finishing the race.
His pit stops may have been fast, emerging in P2 after his first visit, but that just that wasn’t good enough against the fast charging Audis. The French-Canadian now lies 9 points behind Audi’s Martin Tomczyk in the 2011 championship.
Audi dominated the race, finishing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 9th and 9th, with Mattias Ekström crossing the finish line some 40 seconds ahead of team mate Tomczyk.
British interest was best represented by Gary Paffett who started from 18th position, finishing best-placed C-Class driver in 4th. Oliver Jarvis (Audi) finished 9th, David Coulthard (Mercedes) in 10th and Jamie Green (Mercedes) 11th. Susie Stoddart was first of the five retirements, out-braking herself on lap 3 and ending her race in the gravel.
Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG are just 2-points ahead of Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline as the series reaches Valencia in 2 weeks time – they’ll need to find more speed on the track if they’d like it to stay that way.
