Marcus Grönholm recovers in hospital after X Games crash

Marcus Grönholm is recovering in hospital from injuries received during qualifying for tonight’s X Games Rallycross final. The two-time World Rally Champion was left unconscious but breathing after crashing into an exposed beam in the safety barrier.

Grönholm had qualified in 5th place, just behind Sebastien Loeb and hit a solid concrete beam after clearing the jump.

His management team released a statement (right) this evening saying Marcus has regained consciousness and is able to move his limbs, but will remain in hospital under the expert care of the doctors.

Saturday’s crash follows the more serious-looking accident on Friday to Toomas Heikkinen, who broke his ankle after his car fell short and smashed into the other side of the jump.

For this evening’s final Ken Block qualified more than half a second in front of Travis Pastrana, with 8-time WRC champion Sebastien Loeb in 4th.
