How many Ferraris would you need to bring together to beat the world record for the largest ever parade? 50 cars? 200? How about 500? Let me give you a clue – the previous record set in 2008 at Japan’s Fuji Speedway Circuit was 490 cars. Awesome eh?
Well, yesterday the UK Ferrari Owners Club together with Ferrari North Europe (and Ferrari enthusiasts from around the UK and abroad) got together at Silverstone for a very special Ferrari Racing Days track event.
The previous UK record was 385 cars, set on the hallowed Silverstone Circuit at another Ferrari Racing Days event in 2007, but this time the aim was much higher – motivated in no small part by the promise to donate £5 for every participating car to the automotive charity, BEN.
In the end, 964 Ferraris took to the Silverstone circuit, creating an unbeatable spectacle of more than £80 million worth of Ferraris with the new Silverstone Wing as the backdrop.
Although the parade has yet to be officially ratified as a Guinness World Record, the organisers believe all the requisite conditions were met and expect the record to be confirmed by the end of next week.
Ferrari North Europe pulled out all the stops to make it a memorable event for the 900+ entrants, with Scuderia Ferrari F1 driver Felipe Massa attending as guest of honour, joining ex-F1 driver Marc Gene who was there as a special coach for drivers taking part in the F1 Clienti programme.
Felipe led the parade at the wheel of a 458 Spider and said afterwards, “It was a really unforgettable experience, It’s a great honour for me to be here for such a special event, with so many cars all brought together on one race track, which produced an unprecedented spectacle for all Prancing Horse fans.”
The parade featured the entire range of Ferrari cars, including the very latest F12 berlinetta model, and a stunning ensemble of F40s, Enzos, FXX, Scuderia Ferrari F1 F2008 and the ultra-rare 599XX Evoluzione.
Ferrari 458 Italia owner, Iain Dodsworth, Founder of TweetDeck (which was acquired by Twitter in May) filmed the parade (above) using a GoPro Hero2 camera affixed to the rear window of his car.
Iain tweeted at the time, “Driving round Silverstone in a Ferrari was an experience I’ll never forget.” He also cheekily remarked “..it was like a Ferrari traffic jam..”
All in all it was an impressive achievement from all the Ferrari owners, raising £4,820 for the charity, BEN.
If you’re a Ferrari owner, or plan to become one, then perhaps you’d like to keep an ear to the ground about any future record attempts – if so pay a visit to www.ferrariracingdays.com or Ferrari Owners Club GB and stay in the loop.
