GT World Championship winning teams HEXIS and Vita4One are among the eleven teams taking part in the inaugural Baku City Challenge situated close to the Caspian Sea; with a driver line-up including former F1 and CART champion Jacques Villeneuve, ex-F1 racer Jos Verstappen and multiple DTM champion Bernd Schneider.
Since early last week event staff and local companies have been working hard to ready the track, putting up concrete blocks, Armco barriers and safety fences. While teams have been transporting their race cars on two Silkway-Boeing 747-400 F cargo airplanes.
FIA GT3 race cars from BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche all represented plus 15 historic Formula 1 cars, 8 drift cars plus approximately 100 tonnes of equipment for the teams.
The planes took off from Hahn Airport, in the centre of Germany, on Monday evening and began unloading this morning (after clearing customs).
The event kicks off tomorrow (Thursday 25th) with a parade of race cars through the city of Baku and a reception at the Kempinski Hotel Badamdar. Then the track action starts on Friday, with free practice sessions for the City Challenge GT, Classic Grand Prix and Gymkhana City Drift.
The good news is you can follow the action via the web – all information including live-timing and streaming of the event can be found on the organiser’s website.
