If the customer is always right, then Buckingham-based GPRM are sending Toyota a loud and very clear message that the GT86 could do with more power. Of course, racing is very different to driving on the road, but the appeal of a 400bhp GT86 would be universal.

The new car, set to compete in European GT4, is powered by a 2.0-litre direct injection turbocharged four-cylinder ‘Boxer’ engine developed in conjunction with Nicholson McLaren Engines.

GPRM directors Gary Blackham and Roger King believe the new engine from Nicholson McLaren “..will be capable of between 360 and 400 bhp,” although the final output will be determined after testing, once the team has optimised it for performance with reliability.

GPRM has already taken one GT86 order and is in advanced talks with a team keen to race one in the Avon Tyres British GT Championship. GT4 racing is growing in strength and popularity around Europe and the company believe the Toyota GT86 will make an ideal contender. Although not a works effort, the GT4 project has the blessing of Toyota GB, which is providing technical support.
