Earlier this summer Royal Mail ran a competition asking UK motoring fans “if you had to pick one…” (of six British Automotive Legends) “..which would it be?” With the winner being given the model of their choice for a weekend of retro motoring bliss.
If you’re still waiting for that knock on the door, let me put your mind at ease. You didn’t win. But 43-year old Kevin Matthews did, receiving his racing green E-Type (literally) in the post.
“I just can’t believe it. It’s like Christmas has come early, I am so overwhelmed,” said Matthews. It’s a shame the weather wasn’t better suited to roof-down motoring but that didn’t stop Matthews from wearing a sunny demeanour throughout his time with Jaguar’s classic sports car.
Thankfully you can still get involved in supporting the heritage of one of the greatest motoring nations in the world – the special ‘British Auto Legends’ stamps are available for another 12 months via the original competition page – www.ifyouhadtopickone.com.
The main six-stamp set features the ‘Thoroughbreds,’ including the Jaguar E-Type, Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, Aston Martin DB5, MG MGB, Morgan Plus 8 and the Lotus Esprit, while these are complemented by a four-stamp mini-sheet featuring the classic and iconic ‘Workhorses’ – the Morris Minor Van (in Royal Mail livery), Austin FX4 black taxi cab, Ford Anglia 105E and Land Rover Defender 110.
It’s been a great year for British automotive brands with the centenary celebrations of Aston Martin, the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sir Henry Royce and the 50th anniversary since a young Kiwi named Bruce founded McLaren.
