The third-generation Audi TT will make its debut in less than a fortnight at the 84th Geneva motor show – of course we’ve seen many of its design features in the recent Audi Allroad Shooting Brake Concept and judging by these sketches it’s more of an evolution than the Mk2 was from the original.
The front-end features a more aggressive look, with strong horizontals and a broad single-frame grille. The bonnet is contoured in a V-pattern, while the position of the four rings is new – now sitting centrally on the hood, just like the R8.
Struts divide up the air intakes – a design theme which continues to the headlights, which use a similar arrangement of struts as reflectors for the daytime running lights. The headlights can be optionally specified with Audi’s LED technology or with the latest Matrix LEDs, where controllable individual light-emitting diodes generate the main beam. The rear lights match the fronts – using vertical reflectors to match the headlight motif.
Aficionados of TT exhaust systems will be keen to hear that all engine versions feature two large round tailpipes, while the TTS, as with the current model, sprouts four tailpipes from its diffuser.
The interior of the new TT has been redesigned from the ground up, resembling an airplane wing from the top with a turbine look about the air nozzles. Controls for air conditions and seat heating are housed in the vents with small displays indicating their chosen setting.
The biggest change though is the TT’s 12.3-inch TFT monitor which can switch between two display modes. In primary mode the speedometer and rev counter are in the foreground, while in ‘infotainment’ mode the virtual instruments are smaller. The space created can then be used to display functions such as the navigation map.

As with today’s car, the new TT’s multifunction steering wheel features a flat-bottomed rim, with aluminium-look clips framing its spokes. The MMI terminal on the centre tunnel console functions like a smartphone and includes a full-text search function.
With both Audi S3 and Golf R sharing a 296bhp version of the latest EA888 engine, expect the new all-wheel drive TTS to follow suit albeit with perhaps a little more performance, judging by the recent Shooting Brake Concept. That leaves two other variants, the 217bhp front-wheel drive 2.0 TFSI and 181bhp TT Diesel, while a lesser powered 1.8-litre TFSI version will be sold in selected markets.
The new TT will adopt elements of Volkswagen’s MQB platform, shedding weight below the current car’s already impressive 1,260kg to deliver class-leading dynamic performance. Audi say the new TT will unequivocally deserve to be called a ‘sports car’, so expect a return of the TT RS featuring Audi’s 2.5-litre turbocharged TFSI engine.
