Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse – because the world needs another special-edition Lamborghini

You may currently choose from ‘seven’ Lamborghini Gallardos starting with the entry level LP 550-2. But if that isn’t special enough there’s the LP 550-2 Spyder, LP 560-4, LP 560-4 Spyder, LP 570-4 Superleggera Edizione Tecnica and LP 570-4 Spyder Performante Edizione Tecnica.

In addition to these, there have also been several special-edition variants including the LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale, LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni, LP 570-4 Blancpain Edition and now the brand new LP 570-4 Squadra Corse.

Squadra Corse? Where does that fit in the range?

The Lamborghini LP 570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale was previously ‘the most extreme Gallardo ever’, powered by a 562bhp version of the Gallardo’s 5.2-litre V10 engine and weighing 1340kg. But that was launched in 2011 and production was limited to just 150 cars.

So now there’s the LP 570-4 Squadra Corse, based on the Super Trofeo but even closer to the Blancpain Super Trofeo race cars, thanks to its name which refers to the recently-founded department within Automobili Lamborghini responsible for GT3 and Blancpain motorsport activities.

As with the Super Trofeo before, the Squadra Corse borrows its rear wing from the race cars, delivering up to three times the load of that on the Gallardo LP 560-4. There’s a removable engine hood with quick-release system, which together with the wing and many other components is made from carbon composite material.

The LP 570-4 Squadra Corse weighs the same as the Super Trofeo and therefore posts identical acceleration times of 0 to 62mph in 3.4 seconds and 0 to 125mph in just 10.4 seconds. Despite the increased downforce, the Squadra Corse will achieve a top speed of 199mph.

lamborghini_squadra_corse_G0Lamborghini’s Squadra Corse department provides a range of driver academies as well as overseeing the FIA GT and Blancpain Super Trofeo race series.

Standard equipment includes a set of carbon-ceramic brakes and the now (somewhat outdated) robotized e-gear six-speed transmission operated by steering wheel paddles.

Exterior colours attest to the Gallardo’s Italian heritage, with a choice between Giallo Midas (yellow), Bianco Monocerus (white), Grigio Thalasso (grey) or Rosso Mars (red). A decal strip is visible along its flanks displaying the green, white and red colours of the Italian flag.

The hood, front air intakes, rear diffuser and 19-inch forged alloy wheels are painted in high-gloss black, while the huge brakes callipers (8 piston front, 4 piston rear) are available in red, black or yellow.

Inside there’s a minimalist sporty interior with a mixture of carbon fibre and Alcantara. Racing bucket seats are fitted as standard while comfort seats can be specified as an option.

The LP 570-4 Squadra Corse will make its public debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show on 10th September, but there’s no word on how many will be made. So, if you’re tempted by the most extreme Gallardo (ever) then this might be the one to get before Lamborghini introduce an all-new Gallardo in 2014.
