The Audi A1 Mk1, type 8X, is the first-generation A1: Audi's smallest car, a premium supermini built only at Forest in Brussels from May 2010 to 1 August 2018. It came with three doors and, from 2012, with five doors as the Sportback, with petrol and diesel engines from 86PS to 256PS, and more than 909,000 were made. On 28 October 2026 the 199 Mk1 A1s on the first page of PistonHeads' used listings for each registration year were priced from £2,195 to £15,990, with a median of £6,995.

History of the Audi A1 Mk1

Audi showed the Audi A1 to the public at the Geneva motor show in March 2010 and built it on the Volkswagen Group's PQ25 platform, the one under the fifth-generation Volkswagen Polo. GoAuto's review of 13 May 2011 noted the family tie runs the other way too: the Audi 50 of 1974 spawned the first Polo. Listings sites such as mobile.de file the first generation as the Baureihe (series) 8X.

Concept cars from 2007

The shape first appeared as a three-door show car, the A1 project quattro, which made its debut at the Tokyo motor show in 2007. A five-door A1 Sportback concept followed at the 2008 Paris motor show. Audi UK's release on the Paris car gave it a 3.99-metre body, a 150PS 1.4 TFSI engine, a 27hp electric motor, a 62-mile electric range and CO2 of 92g/km. The production car went on sale without the hybrid drive.

Launch in 2010

Fleet News reported on 10 February 2010 that the A1 would make its world debut at Geneva in March and go on sale in the UK from May. Production began in Brussels on 11 May 2010 at a ceremony attended by the Belgian prime minister, Yves Leterme; autoevolution recorded Audi's €300 million investment in the plant and a target of 50,000 cars by the end of 2010.

UK orders opened on 6 May 2010 at £13,145 to £18,280 on the road, according to Audi UK's ordering release. German sales began on 27 August 2010 and the first UK cars arrived in November. Audi's release of 26 August 2010 said more than 150,000 people had registered interest, that capacity would rise by 20 per cent, and that the car could be ordered in more than 800 exterior versions. Justin Timberlake was the A1's brand ambassador; he produced "An Invention", the song by the band Torpedo in its television advert.

The five-door Sportback

Audi unveiled the A1 Sportback at the Tokyo motor show on 30 November 2011, its press notice calling it the first addition to the A1 family. In the UK it cost £560 more than the equivalent three-door, from £13,980 to £21,270, with first deliveries in spring 2012. Audi UK's Sportback release gave it five seats, a body 6mm taller and 6mm wider on the same footprint, and the same 270-litre boot. Samoa Orange paint was offered only on the five-door.

The 2014 facelift

Audi revealed the updated A1 and A1 Sportback in November 2014; Paul Tan's report of 14 November 2014 listed a new bumper, grille and headlamps, tail lamps without the earlier W-shaped signature, and 20mm more length. Audi's release on the update said more than 500,000 A1s had been sold by then and introduced six new or reworked engines from 90hp to 192hp, among them a 95hp 1.0 TFSI, the first three-cylinder petrol engine in Audi's history. Every engine could now have the seven-speed S tronic gearbox, and electromechanical steering, Audi drive select and adjustable dampers were added.

The end of production in 2018

The last first-generation A1 left the Forest line on Wednesday 1 August 2018. The Bulletin reported that A1 production moved to Spain and the Brussels plant turned to Audi's first electric car, the e-tron.

What replaced the Audi A1 Mk1?

The second-generation A1 is built only at SEAT's plant in Martorell, near Barcelona, Audi announced. In 2019 Audi added the A1 citycarver, a 4.04-metre version of the new A1 Sportback with about 4cm more ground clearance and an octagonal grille, according to its launch release. The second range had no four-wheel-drive S1; its quickest model was the front-wheel-drive A1 Competition.

Design and engineering

The Audi A1 Mk1 is a transverse-engined, front-wheel-drive hatchback; only the A1 quattro and S1 have four-wheel drive.

Chassis, suspension and handling

The chassis has MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear; the A1 quattro and S1 use a four-link rear axle instead. Every car had ESP with an electronic differential lock, which brakes the inside front wheel in a fast corner, Audi's Paris 2010 release explained. Audi's Self-Study Programme 477 for the A1 says the launch cars have electro-hydraulic power steering of the same design as on the Audi A2, with an electrically driven pump; the 2014 facelift replaced it with electromechanical steering. GoAuto's 2011 review praised the quick steering and handling of a 1.4 TFSI and noted its firm suspension.

The same programme breaks down the body shell's steel: 46 per cent high-strength steel, 33 per cent soft steel, 5 per cent modern high-strength steel, 5 per cent ultra-high-strength steel and 11 per cent hot-formed ultra-high-strength steel.

Styling by Jürgen Löffler's team

Jürgen Löffler headed the design teams for both the first and second A1. Interviewed by Autocar in June 2018, he said of the second car: "You could say we sent the new A1 to the gym, because the outgoing car looks a little bit round in comparison." On the first car the roof arch could be painted in a contrasting colour; on the Sportback the contrast colour could cover the whole roof.

Interior and equipment

All UK cars at launch had a choice of three engines, safety equipment including ESP, alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric front windows and a CD stereo linked to a 6.5-inch screen that folds up out of the dashboard. Sport trim added larger wheels, sports suspension, sports seats, Bluetooth phone preparation and a driver's information system; S line added 17-inch wheels, its own exterior styling and part-leather seats. Options listed in the Paris release included xenon plus headlamps with LED daytime running lights, a panoramic sunroof, two navigation systems and a 465-watt Bose system with 14 speakers; the Sportback list added a DAB digital radio tuner. What Car?'s judges praised its build quality in 2011: the car "oozes quality everywhere you look and from everything you touch".

Space and practicality

Self-Study Programme 477 gives 1,014mm of headroom in the front and 925mm in the rear, a 663mm load sill and a through-loading width of 921mm. The three-door has four seats; the Sportback has five, with the same 270-litre boot and slightly more head and shoulder room. GoAuto found the driving position had room for people over two metres tall, and that the firm front seats mould to the occupant for comfort on long trips.

Is the Audi A1 Mk1 safe?

For safety, Euro NCAP awarded the A1 its maximum five stars in 2010, Audi UK announced. Standard equipment included front, side and curtain airbags, belt tensioners and force limiters, and Isofix points in the rear.

Audi A1 Mk1 specifications and performance

The A1 Mk1 is 3,954mm long, 1,740mm wide and 1,416mm tall on a 2,469mm wheelbase, with a drag coefficient of 0.33, a 45-litre fuel tank and a 270-litre boot that grows to 920 litres with the rear seats folded, according to the same Audi programme. The facelift took the length to 3,980mm. The unladen weight of a 2010 A1 1.2 TFSI is 1,040kg in Audi UK's 2010 price and specification guide.

Which petrol and diesel engines did the A1 Mk1 have?

The car launched with three engines, all with start-stop: two petrol engines, a 1.2 TFSI with a five-speed manual and a 1.4 TFSI with a six-speed manual or seven-speed S tronic, and a 1.6 TDI diesel engine. The 185PS 1.4 TFSI, shown at Paris in September 2010, uses a supercharger from about 1,500rpm for torque at low revs and a turbocharger from about 3,500rpm; Audi UK put it on sale at £20,705 in S line trim, with S tronic as standard, in its dual-charged release. A 143PS 2.0 TDI followed in late 2011, with 0–62mph in 8.5 seconds in the Sportback, and by 2013 there was a 140PS 1.4 TFSI with cylinder on demand, which shuts two cylinders at light load.

The 1.6 TDI was revised in 2011 to 99g/km of CO2 and 74.3mpg, which freed it from road tax and the London congestion charge as the rules then stood, Audi UK said in its 99g/km release. After the 2014 facelift the range was a 95PS 1.0 TFSI, a 90PS 1.4 TDI ultra (three cylinders), 125PS and 150PS 1.4 TFSIs, a 116PS 1.6 TDI and a 192PS 1.8 TFSI.

Trim levels: SE, Sport and S line

UK cars came in SE, Sport and S line trim, each with any engine except that the 1.4 TFSI was offered only in Sport and S line at launch. Black Edition models sat above S line by 2013; after the facelift Audi added design and sport lines to the options.

Variants and special editions

Beyond the three- and five-door A1, the Mk1 range had two four-wheel-drive models, the A1 quattro and the S1, and a run of UK editions built on S line trim.

Audi A1 quattro

The A1 quattro is a 256PS limited edition of 333 cars, all left-hand drive and all Glacier White with a black roof. Audi's release of 14 February 2012 said it took its 2.0 TFSI engine from the TTS, used a TTS-derived four-link rear axle, had more than 600 new or changed parts and went from concept to production in 17 months; it cost €49,900 in Germany. Nineteen came to the UK at £41,020 each, Audi UK confirmed, most of them sold on deposit before ordering opened. Each car has quattro badges on the grille, roof arch and tailgate, and its serial number on the steering wheel.

Audi S1 and S1 Sportback

The S1 is the production four-wheel-drive A1: a 231PS 2.0 TFSI, six-speed manual gearbox, quattro drive through a multi-plate clutch at the rear axle, a four-link rear axle in place of the torsion beam, and adaptive dampers as standard. Audi UK priced it from £24,900 for the three-door and £25,630 for the Sportback, on order from mid-March 2014. Its name is that of Audi's World Rally Championship-winning S1 of the 1980s. Evo's 2025 review of the S1 quattro notes that a manual was the only gearbox because the dual-clutch unit of the time would not fit, that the price had risen to £27,000 by the end of production, and that no S1 followed: the second A1 range was topped by the front-wheel-drive A1 Competition.

S line Style Edition and Black Edition

Audi UK launched the A1 S line Style Edition for the UK market in July 2013, for the A1 and A1 Sportback with the 1.2 TFSI 86PS, 1.4 TFSI 122PS and 1.6 TDI 105PS engines. A SkiddMark report of 16 July 2013 recorded its prices of £18,125 to £20,605, a premium of £950 over the equivalent S line model for about £2,200 of extra equipment, and its place between S line and Black Edition. The Audi UK release lists the same specification:

  • metallic or pearl paint in Glacier White, Phantom Black, Ice Silver or Misano Red;
  • a gloss black roof line on three-door cars and a fully gloss black roof on the Sportback, with gloss black housings for the door mirrors;
  • a black styling package: gloss grille surround, with the grille, fog lamp surrounds and number plate holder in matt black;
  • xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights, and LED rear lights;
  • 17-inch bi-colour "five V-spoke" wheels, with a "five-arm" design as a no-cost option;
  • air vent sleeves in Misano Red or Glacier White to match the paint, or gloss black with Ice Silver and Phantom Black;
  • the S line's part-leather sports seats and three-spoke sports steering wheel.

The Black Edition, the top of the edition range, added 18-inch titanium-finish wheels, a 180-watt sound system, privacy glass and climate control, and came with the 140PS cylinder-on-demand and 185PS 1.4 TFSIs and the 143PS 2.0 TDI.

Concepts and one-offs

Audi also built A1s that never reached the showroom. The one-off A1 clubsport quattro, shown at the Wörthersee meeting in Austria in June 2011, had a 503PS version of the RS 3's 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine and, Audi UK said, reached 62mph in 3.7 seconds. A spin-painted A1 by Damien Hirst raised £350,000 at Sir Elton John's White Tie and Tiara Ball on 24 June 2010, Audi UK reported.

Audi S1 in rallycross

The A1 Mk1's competition record belongs to the Audi S1 EKS RX quattro, a 560hp rallycross car run by Mattias Ekström's EKS team in the FIA World Rallycross Championship. Ekström won the 2016 drivers' title in it, clinched with fifth place at the Estering in Germany, the penultimate round of the season; he skipped the DTM finale at Hockenheim to race there, his first missed DTM race in 16 seasons, Audi's release on the title said. It was the first world title for an individual Audi driver since Stig Blomqvist's in rallying in 1984.

In 2017 EKS ran four S1s for the first time, at Lohéac in France, with Ekström, Toomas Heikkinen, Reinis Nitišs and the DTM driver Nico Müller, according to Audi.

Buying an Audi A1 Mk1: problems, recalls and running costs

The A1 Mk1's known faults are those of its Volkswagen Group engines: clogged diesel particulate filters, stretched timing chains on high-mileage cars and turbochargers on the 1.4 TFSI. Autocar's used buying guide describes each and adds electrical faults to check.

White facelifted Audi A1 S line three-door on a dealer forecourt

Audi A1 Mk1 reliability: known problems

On the 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels, Autocar's guide says, the particulate filter can clog on cars used only for short trips, and 20 minutes at 60–70mph on a motorway usually clears it. On high-mileage cars a stretched timing chain shows as a whine when the engine is cold or climbing a hill; Autocar budgets about £600 for a new one. Turbochargers on the 1.4 TFSI have failed, at about £2,000 to replace, so look for black smoke or listen for a loud whistle under load.

The electrical faults are smaller: alarms going off at random, parking sensors misreading in the rain, and phones dropping their Bluetooth connection or refusing to pair with the infotainment system.

For the S1, Evo's review warns of crunchy gearboxes and of water pumps and thermostats on the EA888 engine, and says the rear differential needs servicing like the rest of the car.

UK recalls

The DVSA lists one recall that names the A1 Mk1: R/2017/078, launched on 20 February 2017, for airbags and seat-belt pretensioners that might not fire in a crash because of a manufacturing error. It covered Audis built between 1 May and 31 October 2016, and the 2,622 vehicles it counts are for the whole recall, which also names the A4, A5, A6, A7 and A8. The fix is a new airbag assembly and pretensioner where needed. Source: DVSA's vehicle recalls file, downloaded 28 October 2026.

Which Audi A1 Mk1 should you buy?

The 1.0 TFSI is the newest and lowest-mileage group in the price sample, at a median of 46,532 miles; the 1.6 TDI and the 1.2 TFSI are the cheapest, at medians of £4,495 and £4,500, and the diesel suits drivers who do enough motorway miles to keep its filter clear. The 185PS 1.4 TFSI was the quickest front-wheel-drive A1 before the facelift, at 6.9 seconds to 62mph, and every one has the S tronic gearbox.

What does an Audi A1 Mk1 cost to tax?

A1s registered before 1 April 2017 are taxed by CO2 band. On GOV.UK's table for cars registered from March 2001 to March 2017, read on 28 October 2026, a 99g/km 1.6 TDI is in band A at £20 a year, a 119g/km 1.4 TFSI S tronic in band C at £35, the 139g/km 185PS car in band E at £200 and the 162g/km S1 in band G at £275. A1s first registered from 1 April 2017 pay the standard rate of £200.

Audi A1 Mk1 rivals

The Audi A1's rival among premium superminis from the start was BMW's MINI. When Audi showed the 185PS car at Paris in September 2010, it named the MINI Cooper S, the Citroën DS3 DSport and the Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde as its direct rivals, GoAuto reported. A SkiddMark report of 16 July 2013 compared prices: the 98bhp MINI One started at £13,460 against £18,125 for the 85bhp A1 S line Style Edition 1.2 TFSI, and the 120bhp MINI Cooper with a Steptronic automatic cost £16,125. The same report noted that Audi's new A3 started at £18,900, below the dearest Style Edition. GoAuto's 2011 review set the A1 hatchback against the MINI and Fiat 500 and judged its cabin far better than the MINI's. Among mainstream superminis, Evo measured the S1 against the fast versions of the Ford Fiesta and Peugeot 208. Under the skin its closest relative is the fifth-generation Volkswagen Polo: GoAuto's Paris show report of 2010 noted that the 185PS A1 used a stronger version (136kW against 132kW) of the Polo GTI's twincharged 1.4, and the same seven-speed gearbox, and matched its 6.9-second 0–100km/h time.

Reception

What Car? named the A1 its Car of the Year for 2011 and its best supermini, a year after its readers voted it the most exciting car of 2010. Audi UK quoted the magazine's editor-in-chief, Steve Fowler: "The Audi A1 is a brilliant car: brilliantly targeted and brilliantly executed."

The S1 drew mixed praise. Top Gear's UK first drive of 8 May 2014 called it "an eager little terrier" with precise steering, but found the ride busy and the tyre noise loud. Evo judged it "great fun and capable" but less agile than the ST version of the Ford Fiesta or the GTi version of the Peugeot 208. Readers of Auto Bild Sportscars voted it the best production compact car of 2014 with 51 per cent of the vote, Audi reported.
