The new MINI Paceman: It’s one small step for (Country)man..

Forty-three years ago, American astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon. As he put his first foot on the ground, he made the historic declaration, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.

I was reminded of this small piece of history, by the memorial service held to mark the passing of Armstrong in Washington DC, yesterday. But I was also prompted by MINI’s launch of its new Paceman.

Here’s a piece of no-news, if ever there was, perhaps because Audi’s presence at this month’s Paris Motor Show will lack their usual flourish of concept cars and new models. There’ll be the recently launched RS 5 Cabriolet of course, plus the new A3 and R8 e-tron, but we’re not expecting any surprises – which is something of a paradoxical statement in itself.

There’s a lot riding on the new 208 GTi – the troubled French car maker needs a halo model to draw customers back into its showrooms after cutting 8,000 jobs in July. Sales are down 23% compared to 2007 levels and unions have described the cuts as a “declaration of war”.

If ever there was a time to ‘get it right’ with a GTi model, this is it.
