Porsche 911 Carrera S laps the Nürburgring in 7 min 38 seconds (w/VIDEO)

The performance of hyper cars around the Nürburgring, can sometimes be so overwhelming that we lose sight of what’s possible with cars which are considerably more affordable.

Recently, Porsche’s £650,000+ prototype 918 Spyder set a lap time of 7 minutes 14 seconds around the 12.9 mile Nordschleife, and although an awesomely quick time, it was propelled by a 784bhp hybrid powerplant and the optional “Weissach” performance package.

EV Futures: Electric dreams – from nightmare to nirvana

With electric super car ‘halo’ models entering the fray, environmentally-friendly cars are about to become a lot more desirable. So, what’s the catch?

It seems that the ‘on-paper’ superiority of BMW’s M135i xDrive is about to receive a serious challenge from Audi’s all-new S3, due to be launched at the forthcoming Paris Motor Show.

Based upon the new lighter Audi A3, the 2013 S3 weighs 60kg less than its predecessor, tipping the scales at just 1,395kg. And while the S3 Sportback previously wielded 261bhp, its successor deploys a class-leading 296bhp from a completely new 2.0 TFSI engine, developed specifically for the S3.

Limited Edition Audi SQ5 TDI set for Paris, enhanced by quattro GmbH

Here’s a piece of no-news, if ever there was, perhaps because Audi’s presence at this month’s Paris Motor Show will lack their usual flourish of concept cars and new models. There’ll be the recently launched RS 5 Cabriolet of course, plus the new A3 and R8 e-tron, but we’re not expecting any surprises – which is something of a paradoxical statement in itself.

444bhp Audi RS 5 Cabriolet launches online

If you missed Audi’s live premiere of the new RS 5 Cabriolet online, then fear not, there was nothing unexpected in the broadcast which was presented by motorsports commentator Martin Haven, together with Audi DTM drivers Rahel Frey and Edoardo Mortara.
