The Italian temptress – Some people call it passione, others ossessione
I keep being enticed by the Alfa GTV ads on Pistonheads, Autotrader and the like. It’s a simple head/heart conundrum that has no doubt plagued many a motoring enthusiast, who can’t stretch to Italian supercar but can afford Italian sub-par.
The GTV (V6 variant) has every element covered. Noise, looks, cocooned coupe experience and decent real world performance. Sure, it’s difficult to ignore the cam-belt and electrical maladies, but the thing just oozes style and grace from every angle, curve and orifice. And £5K will afford you a decent example that can thrill like few other cars on the road. What’s not to like?
I mean picture scything through the Tuscan hills, Maria Callas on the stereo and a case of Brunello in the limited boot space… Magical.

To be honest, the interest is becoming more of an obsession. The supercar morning at the Goodwood Breakfast Club a couple of weeks ago was awash with prestige marques. Yet, when a GTV Cup burst into view I could barely contain my tumescence. It was like being interested in the party munter, the bespectacled fatty, the caked-and-baked borderline-ho from the wrong side of the tracks. It was pure filth.
It may be crazy. Illogical. Downright idiotic. But somehow life would make more sense if 14ft of Alfa passione was part of it. Anybody with me?
